Selena Quintanilla was a famous singer. She recorded many Tejano songs including “Como La Flor”, “Dreaming Of You”, and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican-American singer who was well known in the ’80s. Selena was also known as the queen of Tejano music. Selena’s band was Los Dinos included her elder siblings. Selena, Los Dinos, and Suzette Quintanilla were together from 1982 until her death in 1995. Her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican American entertainers of the early 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade, while her posthumous collaboration with MAC cosmetics became the best-selling celebrity collection in cosmetics history. Selena was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Some songs that she wrote were “Dulce Amor”, “Always Mine”, “Amor Prohibido” etc. Selena was described as the Queen of Tejano and the star of all time.” 

 

Selena was named female Vocalist of the year and performed of the year at the Tejano Music award Two years later she signed with EMI Latin and in 1990, Selena and Los Dinos released their eponymous debut album. Later that year she released a singles compilation, personal best, and she also released Ven Conmigo. In 1991 the title track of the latter became the first Tejano record to go gold. Selena also released two more albums, including one of cumbia music, “Baila Esta Cumbia” that year. Her brother, Abraham Quintanilla III who played bass and penned many of Selena songs, and her sister Suzette, the drummer. Selena won her first Grammy in 1994 for Best Mexican American Performance for her album. That same year, she released an album of love songs, “Quiero”, “Tu Solo Tu”, “I Could Fall In Love”, “Dreaming of You”, etc. Selena opened a clothing manufacturing business with designer Martin Gomez with designs and styles of Latin American texture and exotic clothing which became her trademark on stage.

She was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, TX. Selena started singing at age 10 when her father found her talent for singing. Selena’s first language is English so growing up Selena spoke English but her father taught her to sing in Spanish. She eventually became fluent in Spanish. She started performing at a very young age. By the age of 10, she became the lead singer of her family’s band, Selena y Los Dinos. They started to play locally, they played at parties and weddings. Selena was a child of 3 siblings A.B. Quintanilla, her sister Suzette Quintanilla and her Selena Quintanilla. Her father is Abraham Quintanilla and her mother Maricella Samora. Her oldest sibling was her brother A.B. of 55 years old then her sister Suzette Quintanilla of 52 years old and  Selena being the youngest of 47 years old today. Her father Abraham is 80 years old today and her mother Maricela is 75 years old. Selena got married in 1992 to her husband Chris Perez. 

 

On March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered. The president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, shot her at the hotel Days Inn in Corpus Christi, TX. Yolanda Saldivar had been managing Selena’s shop in San Antonio. The two were meeting in a hotel room to discuss Selena’s concerns that Yolanda Saldivar was embezzling money, according to court records, when Yolanda Saldivar shot Selena. Yolanda Saldivar claimed the shot was accidental. She was sentenced to life in prison in October 1995.

 

Millions cherished Selena Quintanilla and still do. To this day Selena’s music is still being played. She was a fashion icon. She brought Tejano music mainstream. Selena brought the Latino community together with music and still does 24 years later.
