900 to 2,000 new cases of animal abuse are reported every year, leading to 250,000 animals not rescued. Also, over 150 million animals are killed for food around the world, and 56 billion land animals are killed per year in the U.S. alone. Therefore, there is a total of 3 billion animals being  killed each year.

Ms. Juarez, O’Donovan Academy Counselor, said she was worried about animals being killed in shelters, but she knows that sometimes it’s the best solution to the problem of over breeding. “I do not like the idea of animals being put down, but it is part of reality and people are not taking care of them,” she said.

The Humane Society was established on November 24, 1954, and this organization is still here. The founders of the Humane Society are Marcia Glaser, Fred Myers, Larry Andrews, and Helen Jones. Also, the humane society of the U.S is the most effective animal protection organization.  The Humane Society is all over the earth where they help all kinds of animals.

The purpose of the Humane Society is to protect animals, fight for animal rights, stop animal cruelty, give humane education, etc.  According to the Humane Society website:

  • “12,932 ANIMALS Helped through our care centers.”
  • “25,000+ ANIMALS Altered and vaccinated in Puerto Rico through our Spayathon program.”
  • “100,000 COMPANION ANIMALS Altered, vaccinated or otherwise helped by Pets For Life, which supports underserved communities.”

The Humane Society can make a huge impact in animal rescue, but can’t do the same for every animal. According to my research, I learned that even though the Humane Society says they have a “No-Kill” policy, that is the same exact thing they are doing. The reason why they have to kill animals sometimes is because they do not have enough space for animals, so they have no choice but to euthanize animals.

Every year the Humane Society rescues more than 23,000 animals in need of help. There are  thousands of programs for animals in need of help or for adoption. Also, the Humane Society is one of the nation’s leading organizations in caring for animals. The mission of the Humane Society of the United States is to protect animals, fight for animal rights, stop animal cruelty, give humane education, etc.  A fun fact is that the Humane Society is “A nonprofit, charitable organization…funded almost entirely by private membership dues, contributions, foundation grants, and bequests.”

8th grader Ximena Salazar expressed  worry about the way some animals are treated in this country. “Some possible ways that I could help the humane society would be by encouraging others to treat animals with respect because animals can suffer when they are being mistreated. They feel the same pain we humans feel when we get hurt no matter what way it is. Animals are just as important as us humans.”

Some ways that we as people can help with this is:

  • Volunteer in your local shelter
  • If you see an animal in need call the humane society at 202-452-1100 or 866-720-2676
  • Or try to help the animal, by giving it food, water, etc.
  • Donate monthly to help animals at: https://www.humanesociety.org
  • Rescue animals in need for people to find them loving and trusting homes for them to live in so that they won’t suffer
  • Have Male animals be neutered, so that they can not reproduce with a female. Females should be spayed so do not reproduce with males. This will lead to less animals being reproduced and abandoned on the streets.
  • When adopting an animal try to adopt a animal that is in serious need of help and treatment
